A Humectant is an ingredient in hair products that draws moisture into the hair from the air . For dry hair , you want to be able to hold moisture, for fine, limp hair you want to repel moisture. Humectants are also found in skin care products .
The word "shampoo" was born in England when British hairdressers coined the word "shampoo" from the Hindu word "champo" which means "to message" or "to knead". But it was not until the 1890s in Germany that the first actual detergent-based shampoo was introduced to the world. Previosly, cleansing solutions for the hair were concocted as early as ancient Egyptian times when the Egyptians mixed water and citrus juice to remove the hair's sebum oil.
The modern shampoo business owes its beginning in America to John Breck who developed various hair and scalp cleansing solutions in hopes of curing his early-onset baldness. Breck first came up with shampoos for normal hair which were popular in beauty salons in the 30s. Later, he developed a complete shampoo line for oily and dry hair. Although he had built an empire of hair care products, Breck was not able to stop his own baldness. Today , there are hundreds of shampoos available ,from expensive brand names lining cosmetic counters of the finest department stores to promotionally priced gallons at your local discounter. shampoos do more than just clean hairand stimulate the scalp. in your salon , your stylist uses special formulations of shampoo to prepare hair for chemical services ,such as perms or hair color. Shampoos are also helpful in adding body, texture, and shine to hair. some revive color, while others can strip away styling product buildup or even chlorine from the pool. The key to selecting the right shampoo for you is the type of hair you have. is it normal. oily, dry, fine, coarse or chemically treated. The term "pH" refers to the balance between acid and alkaline, which must be measured with the presence of water, because dry substances do not have a pH. pH ranges from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral, like water anything under 7.0 is acid , anything above is alkaline. Human hair seems to like a mildly acid pH level. Although hair has no pH , the scalp and the natural oils which coat the cuticle of the hair do have a pHbetween 4.5 and 5.5. Shampoos that claim to be pH balanced usually range from 4.5 to 6.5. Basically , pH balanced means that the shampoo is gentle not harsh .
